REAL ART!! (Thanks to Pixar)

Finally! Thursday, Friday and Saturday l spent down in Melbourne attending some visiting speakers from Pixar at ACMI's 20 Years of Pixar exhibition. I can't describe in the blog what l got out of this so l won't even try! However one thing l managed to do was to be inspired enough to come home and spend yesterday painting. With REAL paint. I'd bought a small pack of gouache a few months ago with a plan to try to paint again. Something l'd been hoping to do for the last 5 years since l discovered Painter and hid my paintbox under the bed.

To cut a long story short: the following 2 paintings are far from my best work ... but hey, they're REAL.




(I must mention that l used Bob Kato's method when painting these, which is why l stole his intense aqua uplight in the second painting. I'd actually like to go back and fix this (along with a few other things) but l can't remix the colours l need .... if only l had an eyedropper tool.)

This was just an experimental illustration using some new brushes in Painter. I don't really like how it turned out at all.

The other night l thought l'd do a warm up sketch before starting on a cartoon l'm working on. The first thing l saw was the wood carving of an Elephant we got in Africa. I sketched away. It turned out ok so during my lunch break today l thought l'd add some colour ...

Going to try to post a little more often. Its been a bit hard as l've been putting my children's book submission together since l can't show any of the work. But here's anothery from the vault. The other star from my never-to-be-completed short western, ... the Sheriff.

Self Portrait

For some reason there's an unwritten rule that great artists create a self portrait very couple of years. I'm obviously not in that crew since this is my first in 28 years. It'll be the first for a while to come too, there are much sexier people to draw out there than me ... it was good fun all the same though.

This was a sketch that came about when trying to come up with some ideas for Tshirt designs. Some of the ideas where ok ... many were not, I quite liked this idea of a South American drug dealing chimp though for some reason.
